How Roman numerals work

Roman numerals are a number system that uses letters to represent fixed values: I (1), V (5), X (10), L (50), C (100), D (500), and M (1000). Numbers are created by combining these symbols, usually placing the larger values first and adding them together, such as VIII for 8 (5 + 3) or MMXXVI for 2026 (2000 + 20 + 6).

To keep numerals shorter, Roman numerals also use subtractive notation, where a smaller symbol placed before a larger one is subtracted, like IV for 4 and IX for 9, as well as XL (40), XC (90), CD (400), and CM (900).

A roman numeral date converter applies these same rules to the day, month, and year, then formats the result into a Roman numeral date you can copy and use.

How to convert a date to Roman numerals manually

To convert a date to Roman numerals by hand, convert the day, month, and year separately, then write them in your chosen date order.

For each number, match the largest Roman numeral value that is equal to or less than the number, subtract it, and repeat until you reach zero, writing down each symbol as you go.

Use subtractive pairs where needed, such as IV, IX, XL, XC, CD, and CM, to avoid repeating the same symbol too many times.

For example, 1778 becomes MDCCLXXVIII, and a Roman numeral date like 28/09/2015 can be written as XXVIII/IX/MMXV (or in another format if you prefer).

Doing this manually is possible, but it is easy to make mistakes, which is why a Roman Numeral Date Converter is a quicker way to get the correct result instantly.
